BEST-KEPT SECRET: SERRE CHEVALIER

Serre Chevalier, often known as "France's biggest unknown resort", remains relatively unheard of in Britain, despite extensive, varied and pleasantly wooded ski terrain and a wide choice of affordable accommodation. The resort comprises one town and 12 villages, of which four make up the main ski destinations: Briancon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Monêtier les Bains. Each provides access to the slopes and has a distinctive character, from the busy town of Briancon to romantic little Monêtier, with family-friendly Chantemerle and lively Villeneuve in between.

Skiers of all levels will enjoy Serre Chevalier – there are good nursery slopes and long, gentle, green slopes for beginners, 155 miles of predominantly green, blue and red pistes for intermediates, some challenging black pistes and acres of freeriding for advanced skiers.

The ski area is serviced by predominantly efficient lifts, providing skiers with easy access to a wide variety of terrain and the ability to roam across it freely. Try to avoid the resort during French school holidays – Serre Chevalier's charms are no secret in France.
